Central Station Coffee & Tea Goes Green!

The owners and staff of Central Station Coffee & Tea are deservedly proud of all the sustainable practices they have put in place. Here's what they have to say:

"Sustainability is an important part of our business. We continue to make improvements within the café to lighten our carbon footprint which has also sparked some great conversations with our customers.

We separately collect our coffee / espresso grounds, filters, food scraps, tea leaves, napkins, paper towels, to be composted with Collective Resource (with the help of a Green Grant from Go Green Wilmette.) Composting turns these items into nutrient rich soil that goes right back into our earth. We also recycle our paper, plastic, glass, and aluminum items.`

Getting something to go? You’ll notice that our to-go bags are paper (instead of plastic) and our utensils are compostable, which we will ask you first if they’re needed!

Dining in with us will give you the option of using our reusable cups, mugs & silverware.

We also offer a $0.50 discount to customers who bring their own reusable mug!

Lastly, each month, we adorn our walls with artwork created by a local artist. This month features Kate Eddon’s collages made from recycled materials where each canvas starts with pages from old books, a signature button, and other objects displayed within box frames salvaged from the flooring of her Victorian home. Come check it out!

All of our efforts are reducing the amount we send to the landfills while also supporting our circular economy!

Happy World Wetlands Day!

This is an effort to make people understand the importance of wetlands to a healthy planet and to human beings. As we become aware of the growing crisis surrounding lack of clean water, it's important to understand that wetlands provide a vital source of freshwater. They help sustain humans. Rice, which provides 20 percent of food globally, is grown in wetlands. Wetlands also mitigate heavy rainfall impacts and lower risks from floods and storm surges.

In Europe and the U.S., wetlands that once covered vast sections of the land we now farm and live on have been drained and turned to other purposes. This enormous change gives us less of a buffer as climate change brings more severe weather and droughts. Keep in mind, though, that wetlands can be restored to provide their valuable services again.

Look for ways you can support wetlands preservation and restoration by forest preserves and private nonprofits such as land trusts. Wetlands can be part of a climate and clean water solution!
