We can all help reduce the huge environmental cost of that waste by shopping, cooking and eating mindfully. Take a look at your habits at home and when eating out. Have your kids help by recording what gets discarded. Make a family pledge to save money and help the planet by wasting less. For more tips on how to reduce food waste, visit or

TIP: Enjoy the snow! If you shovel instead of using a snow blower, you "burn your own fuel" quietly and cleanly and contribute to a healthier environment. According to the EPA, the average snowblower creates as much carbon monoxide emissions in an hour as a car driving approximately 70 miles! Keeping your sidewalks clear also helps others walk instead of drive in the winter, so grab your shovel and be a part of the solution.

Electricity Aggregation Proposed: The Village of Wilmette is exploring the idea of "aggregating" residential and small commercial retail customers to collectively purchase electricity on the open market. The intent of aggregating customers is to obtain better prices than we can get as individuals. A referendum will appear on the March 20th primary ballot asking voters if they want the Village to move forward with the program. GGW has asked the Village to take environmental concerns into consideration in this process and to engage the Wilmette Environmental and Energy Commission to review options.

Rain Barrels for Sale at Village Hall: To promote the use of rain barrels, the Village of Wilmette is selling rain barrels at the Village Hall for $55.46 each (while supplies last). The barrels are available for residents to pick-up from either Village Hall or the Public Works Facility (711 Laramie Avenue) during regular business hours. The rain barrel container not only helps manage storm water, but also collects and stores rainwater that you can use later to water your garden, lawn, and potted plants. Save Your Trees: With so many of our beautiful trees succumbing to disease and pests, every tree matters. One threat is under your control - repeated weed-whacking/trimming that damages or girdles tree trunks. If you do not have a circle of mulch around your trees and you have a yard crew using a weed whacker for trimming, there is a good chance your tree trunks have been damaged or completely girdled. If the trunks are damaged, the tree is more susceptible to disease and pests. Once girdled, the tree will die. So check your trees today, especially the younger replacement trees that have been recently planted. The best defense is placing a circle of mulch around each trunk, but do not bury the trunk in mulch. Then, instruct your yard crew never to use a weed-whacker to trim close to tree trunks. Spread the word before we lose more trees.

Back to School Tips
Elmwood Avenue Land Use Issue
GREEN TIP: Back to School time is a great time to "green-up" your practices whether you have school children or not. Pack eco-friendly and healthy lunches using non-disposables and make sure your child is actually eating what you pack. (Food waste from home-packed lunches has a large eco-footprint!) Walk or bike to school with your kids - it is both calming and invigorating. Encourage your child not to waste school supplies and don't buy more than they need. Discuss the eco-impacts of their actions and choices. Finally, consider volunteering with your school's Environmental Awareness Committee.

Wilmette Park District's Board President Jim Brault has this to say about the Elmwood Avenue parcel: "Also under investigation is the status of an unimproved right of way at the end of Elmwood Avenue that has historically provided public access to Lake Michigan. While the area is small in size, residents have urged both the Village and the Park District to preserve the public land for public use. Again, no decisions have been reached, but we are actively studying the issue. . . . I encourage you to provide your input and feedback. Please do not hesitate to contact me at jbrault@wilpark.org."

Elmwood Avenue Land Use Issue
GREEN TIP:
According to the Wall Street Journal, the US consumes nearly 100 billion plastic bags a year. You can reduce your use even more with this great tip - If you forget to take your tote bags into the grocery store, just ask the clerk to scan your items and reload them into your cart. You can bag the items in a minute or two at your car. If you have left your bags at home, you can load your items carefully into the back seat or trunk of your car. Watch this incredible 4 minute "mockumentary" about plastic bags. Great for kids!
FEATURED EVENTS:
Growing Your Own Food and "The $64 Tomato": If you have tried growing your own food, or are considering it, join us at the library for a discussion of the rewards and challenges. Laugh at the hilarious (mis)adventures of author William Alexander as told in "The $64 Tomato." You do not have to read the book to enjoy the round table discussion. Bring your own stories to share and an example of your produce to show off. Wilmette Public Library, July 20th, 2pm and 7pm.

News: The Wilmette Junior High School, with the full support of Principal Dave Palzet and staff, has established a pilot project to eliminate plastic water bottles in the school cafeteria. Lali Watt and Cathy Taylor planned carefully for a seamless launch of the program which could save 30,000 plastic water bottles each year.
Go Green Wilmette, in partnership with Go2Green, is distributing energy and water conserving pre-rinse sprayers to local restaurants, churches, and schools. The replacement sprayers operate with greater pressure and restricted water flow, thus saving restaurants an average of $500/year from less water use, lower sewer fees, and reduced use of gas for heating the water. The program is underwritten by NICOR through an instant rebate, so there is no charge to the establishments.
If you missed the award-winning documentary films, "Tapped" and "Bag It" you may check them out from the Wilmette Public Library. People who attended our showings said that the films were eye-opening, even life-changing.
